Opinel carbon steel is an unalloyed steel with a high carbon content which, after the heat treatment operation, provides excellent hardness that guarantees perfect edge retention as well as great resistance to wear and easy resharpening.
However, as carbon steel has a low resistance to corrosion by humidity, it requires precautions in use: do not leave your knife in a damp environment, especially in a dishwasher, wipe the blade with a greasy cloth after use and grease it often as well as its joint.
Beech is the wood most often used for the manufacture of Opinel handles. Coming from French farms, it is hard, resistant and easy to work. It has a homogeneous appearance and its light colour varies from yellow to pink. It is recognisable by the presence of numerous small dark lines.
The handle is varnished to be better protected against humidity and dirt.
